Greek Demographic Decline in September of 2024 was the first mention of the slow motion demise of the current state occupying the cradle of democracy. There are Greek Ghost Towns in the hinterlands, and now the same problem that plagues Gaza, Yemen, and the Tigris/Euphrates basin, has become publicly visible for Greece.
Not enough water.
This particular piece is about the 40% - 60% leakage rate in Greek water infrastructure, which parallels the numbers seen in Syria. Recall that Greece was badly affected by the 2008 financial crisis, and by 2009 the country was on the verge of collapse. The IMF’s response was described as Institutional Monstrous Failure.
We can NOT permit this continue.
This problem is NOT going to get better.
We can NOT waste half of our water.
CAN NOT.
And yet … we … are.
Watch this space, both for Greece, and for water in general. Water was a big focus for me in the 2013 - 2014 time frame on the Neal Rauhauser Wordpress site. I don’t know much for sure, but I do know THIS - fresh water for societies is like oil in an engine. The friction starts when the pumping stops and if not corrected the end is the sort of catastrophic failures we’re seeing in Gaza, and Syria, and Yemen. Yes, sure, you can argue all sorts of angles about those three, especially Gaza, but in a back to the future moment here … it’s the water, stupid.
