Here’s my guess on the geopolitical back story - Russia messed with French holdings in Africa. Russia is no longer capable of supporting Armenia, which is pinned between Turkey and Azerbijan. France has decided to have a new friend in Armenia, payback for Russia fuckery in Africa. I bet at a minimum Armenian intel knew about Durov’s travel plans, notifying the French, and perhaps even managed to somehow influence the trip.
