Smallest Possible Affordable Robust Compact
SPARC fusion reactors.
I have been guardedly excited about Helion, a company nearing production with a novel fusion reactor design. We have terrible problems with not just energy, but also environment and economic issues. If you have two of them stable, you can fix the third. We got nothin’
But multiple competing fusion energy players, not just chattering endlessly about it, but actually building stuff that might work … maybe if we supercharge one side of that iron triangle of collapse, we can power our way through problems in the other two …
Toroidal fusion has limped along since before I was born, finally reaching the point where they got a little dab more out of a reaction than they put into it. That’s deeply underwhelming, because utility scale production from there might as well be a Mars shot.
But now this clever little team with some well nigh magical magnets … they might actually make a go of it. I hope both Helion and SPARC get to production, but I’d be thrilled if even one of these two came to pass.
