As an older Gen-X, while I was coming of age, the Soviet Union was coming apart. Our brains stop their teenage rewiring around twenty five, so their final dissolution was my Christmas present that year, although I didn’t truly appreciate what it meant at the time.
Sixty is right around the corner for me, and a major realignment in the coalitions that make up our two party system began with the arrival of the Tea Party in 2009. I greatly dislike what Zeihan has to say here. I’m not saying he’s wrong, I’m saying this wrecks my ability to predict what’s next - The unions are shifting to the Republican party?!?!
But that, among the other changes to our national expectation of a structurally balanced two party system … if we get through this without turning into some shitty third world style theocracy … like I said, this wrecks my ability to predict what’s next, and at my age that is deeply disconcerting.
