Iβve known about Transnistria since shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine back in 2014, but Iβd never noticed Gagauzia until 2023. There was even a Gagauzia Conflict right after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, which was news to me this morning, despite my interest in the Soviet dissolution.
The friction with Gagauzia is a classic Russian move - find separatist movement, fund it, cause trouble for a democracy. We have the same problem right here in Sacramento - Russian backed Calexit.
Here is where I first noticed Gagauzia β¦ the interception of an FSB plot against the Moldovan government in the spring of 2023. I happened to be paying attention to Transnistria at the time β¦ for reasons β¦ and this thing came across my desk.
I hope that Maia Sandu is on her game here in the summer of 2025; the Russian tentacles in the Caucasus have been lopped off, Serbia is coming unzipped from the Kremlin, and the last thing the world needs is some new nuisance on Ukraineβs western flank β¦ and NATOβs eastern.
