I periodically mention that I am on the autism spectrum, but I don’t think I’ve ever explained the particulars. There’s a genetic component to my trouble, my son has the same thing, but my trouble was complicated by hip dysplasia. While most infants are eagerly studying human faces, I was in a half body cast in a state orphanage.
As a result, I’m told that I am “odd” in person. I’ve heard words like aloof, detached, or inscrutable over the years. But the worst, when it comes to medical care?
DECEPTIVE
I’m asked about my symptoms. I describe my symptoms. I get a strange look, followed by no attention on the actual problem. This has been my experience with roughly half of all interactions, and with specialists in particular, since those are usually brief, transactional relationships.
This happened to me again today, so I’m in need of an allergist or immunologist in the Easy Bay area. Something in the John Muir & Friends system would probably be covered. It has to be BART accessible, so any one of Concord, Pleasant Hill, or Walnut Creek would be fine.
